Ho Chi Minh City

Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnamese: Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh; [tʰàn fǒ hò tɕǐ mɨ̄n] ( listen)) or Vietnamese pronunciation: [tʰàn fǒ hò cǐ mɨ̄n], formerly named and still usually mentioned as Saigon (Vietnamese: Sài Gòn; [sàj ɣɔ̀ŋ] ( listen)), is the largest city in Vietnam by population. It was once known as Prey Nokor (Khmer: ព្រៃនគរ) prior to annexation by the Vietnamese in the 17th century. Under the name Saigon, it was the capital of the French colony of Cochinchina and later of the independent republic of South Vietnam 1955–75. On 2 July 1976, Saigon merged with the surrounding Gia Định Province and was officially renamed Ho Chi Minh City after revolutionary leader Hồ Chí Minh (although the name Sài Gòn is still widely used).[4]

The metropolitan area, which consists of the Ho Chi Minh City metropolitan area, Thủ Dầu Một, Biên Hòa, Vũng Tàu, Dĩ An, Thuận An and surrounding towns, is populated by more than 10 million people,[nb 1] making it the most populous metropolitan area[5] in Vietnam. The city's population is expected to grow to 13.9 million by 2025.[6]

The Ho Chi Minh City Metropolitan Area, a metropolitan area covering most parts of the south-east region plus Tiền Giang Province and Long An Province under planning, will have an area of 30,000 square kilometres (12,000 sq mi) with a population of 20 million inhabitants by 2020.[7]

University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Ho Chi Minh City

University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Ho Chi Minh City is a not-for-profit, public, medical school. It is located in Ho Chi Minh City, Viet Nam. It is the largest and highly competitive medical school in the southern part of Viet Nam [1][2] . The university’s areas of focus are health education, basic research, and clinical research. It offers undergraduate (Bachelor of Science), professional (Doctor of Medicine, Bachelor of Pharmacy and Bachelor of Dentistry) and research graduate degrees (Master and Doctorate).

The Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy of Saigon was established in 1947 in Saigon as a division of the Indochina School of Medicine in Hanoi.In 1961, it was divided into the Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Pharmacy of Saigon. Then the Faculty of Dentistry was founded in 1964. Whereas, in the Resistance zone of the South-East of Vietnam the training of medical staff was provided by the College of Medicine established in 1965.

Following the Reunification of the country, the University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Ho Chi Minh City was founded in 1976 as an integration of the above mentioned schools and was composed of three faculties: the Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Pharmacy and Faculty of Odonto-Stomatology. In 1994, the Faculty of Fundamental Sciences was established in order to provide the teaching of basic sciences to students of the three faculties during their first semesters of training.

In 1998, the University was expanded to train auxiliary medical staff with the joining of the Faculty of Nursing and Medical Technology originated from Central Medical Technical School III. Then Tue Tinh National Medical School II and Department of Traditional Medicine of the Faculty of Medicine merged together to become the Faculty of Traditional Medicine.

In 1999, the Faculty of Public Health was founded, from the merging of the Public Health Department of the Faculty of Medicine and the Division of Health Organization and Management of the Ho Chi Minh City Institute of Hygiene and Public Health.

In 2000, the University opened its own medical center of 250 beds doted with modern medical equipment and highly qualified staff. This medical center was soon followed by four others, amounted the total number of beds of the University Medical Center to 500.Therefore, since 2000, the University was composed of the seven faculties mentioned above and one University Medical Center.

In 2005, the university was recognized as one of the two strategic medical teaching institutions of the country. The university offers the most comprehensive array of training for health professionals from undergraduate to graduate level. The University Hospital is with 650 beds and modern teaching and research facilities.

Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine

Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine is a public medical school in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. It offers graduate and postgraduate education in medicine, health care staff training for the city.

It was officially recognized as a University on 7/1/2008. The approval decision was written by Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung.[2]

Originated from a center for training and educating of healthcare staff in Ho Chi Minh City, Pham Ngoc Thanh University of Medicine was directed by the city council to operate as a university for the city. Unlike Ho Chi Minh City Medicine and Pharmacy University, it only allows Ho Chi Minh citizens who have city hukous (household registers) to attend.
